In September 2014, nearly 3.5 million email addresses and passwords from Mail.ru accounts were leaked on a Russian Bitcoin Security Forum. Mail.ru analyzed the data and reported that 95% of the leaked accounts had already been flagged as compromised, restricted, or inactive. The company attributed the breach to phishing scams targeting users, rather than a direct attack on their servers.
