What happened in the Taringa Breach?

In August 2017, Taringa!, a popular Latin American social networking platform, experienced a significant data breach affecting nearly all of its 28 million registered users. The compromised data included usernames, email addresses, and passwords hashed using the outdated MD5 algorithm, which is considered insecure due to its vulnerability to rapid cracking.
Upon discovery of the breach, Taringa! promptly implemented a platform-wide password reset and upgraded its password hashing mechanism to the more secure SHA-256 algorithm.
