In June 2020, popular storytelling platform Wattpad suffered a major data breach that compromised the personal information of millions of users. Initially, the stolen database was quietly sold in private circles before eventually being leaked publicly on a well-known hacking forum, escalating concerns among users and cybersecurity experts alike.
The Wattpad breach involved a wide range of sensitive user information, including usernames, email addresses, birth dates, and gender data. Some reports also indicated that password data was part of the breach, although Wattpad later clarified that all affected passwords were encrypted. Nevertheless, the scale of the exposure — impacting an estimated 268 million user records — made it one of the largest security incidents involving a creative content platform to date.
Following the breach, Wattpad launched an internal investigation and worked with external security firms to assess the extent of the damage. The company reassured users that financial information, such as credit card numbers, had not been compromised.
The precise method used to compromise Wattpad’s systems remains unclear.
